The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur was the culmination of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh's astronomical aspirations.

Maharaja Sawai Man Singh was a brilliant ruler, art patron, scholar and astronomer. He was commissioned by Emperor Muhammad Shah to make certain astronomical calculations using already existing information on planets, stars and their positions.

Maharaja Sawai Man Singhji took around seven years to accomplish the task. In the process he built massive observatories in different parts of India. The one in Jaipur was the most remarkable. Sawai Man Singh called the royal observatory - Jantar Mantar that was a derivation on the term Yantra Mantra i.e. formulae and equipment.

The construction of the Jaipur royal Observatory was completed in the year 1728. La Hire's tables were used as the main principle for building this astronomical observatory. An interesting fact to note is that once the observatory was built it was more accurate than the tables.

The large astronomical instruments at the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur are built of mortar and stone. See the Ram Yantra, Jai Prakash Yantra and the Samrat Yantra. In all there are 14 astronomical devices at the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, each with a specific function to perform.

Every instrument at the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is marked with an astronomical scale. Jantar Mantar was accorded the status of a national monument in the year 1948.
