A five-storied beehive like structure, the Hawa Mahal brims with trellis-work and sculptural grandeur. The Hawa Mahal was built by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh in the year 1799.
Designed by Lal Chand Usta, the Hawa Mahal was a part of the royal zenana or women's quarters. A unique feature of the structure is that it is about a foot thick and stands 50 feet tall. Interiors of the Hawa Mahal are extremely simple and stand in perfect contrast to its exquisitely chiseled exterior.
In all there are 953 cubicles that form this spectacular pyramidical structure each designed to accommodate a lady with a screened Jharokha balcony that offering a birds eye view of the going ons of Jaipur's bazaars.
There are no stairs but stone ramps that lead to the Hawa Mahal cubicles.
