MUNNAR
- Meandering roads with hair pin-like bends bring you to Munnar, a beautiful
hill station in Kerala. Beautiful because of its sun-kissed hills and clean
air, whispering streams and innumerable waterfalls. Wildlife sanctuaries and
nearby tea plantations give vacationers another reason to come here. Trekkers
and hikers love the challenges the various routes have to offer. You can also
come if you simply like the hills, hospitality and hot aromatic tea.
At a height of 1500 m above sea level, Munnar is in the Western Ghats of Kerala
and situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni
and Kundala. The British were the first settlers in the area and compared the
landscape to the glens and rolling hills of Scotland. They were also the first
ones to grow various crops in 1887 and finally settled on tea plantations. Today
most of them are owned by the Tata Tea Ltd, the tea company most Indians swear
by.
Not only is Munnar famous for its tea plantations and as an ideal getaway for
honeymooners, it is also home to some of the most exotic flora and fauna of
the Western Ghats. One of them being the Neelakurunji flowers, that cover the
hills in a blanket of bright blue every twelve years. The highest peak of South
India, Anamudi (2695 m) is a popular trekking spot for novices and seasoned
hikers alike.
