Kaziranga National Park is located on the banks of River Brahmaputra in the northeastern state of Assam in India. The park is situated in the Bokakhat district of Assam and covers an area of 430 sq. km. The park, with its swamps and tall groves of elephant grass, is the ideal habitat for the One-Horned Rhino. Kaziranga National Park was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1940.

The main attractions of Kaziranga National Park

The main attraction of Kaziranga National Park is of course the great one horned Indian Rhino. Other attractions include large population of Indian Elephants, Indian Bison, swamp deer or barasingha, hog deer, sloth bears, tigers, leopard cats, jungle cats, otters, hog badgers, capped langurs, hoolock gibbons, wild boar, jackal, wild buffalo, pythons, monitor lizards and the list goes on.

Kaziranga National Park is also a paradise for bird watchers. You can see raptors like oriental honey buzzard, black-shouldered kite, black kite, brahminy kite, pallas's fishing eagle, white tailed eagle, grey headed fishing eagle, Himalayan griffon, etc. Besides these, the tourists can see a large number of migratory birds as well. During winters, birds like greylag geese, bar headed geese, ruddy shelduck, gadwall, falacated duck, red-crested pochard and northern shoveller and so on.

Elephant safari and sightseeing in and around Kaziranga is another great thing to do. Mid- November to early April is the best time to visit Kaziranga. During monsoon, the Park gets flooded with water from the mighty Brahmaputra River.

How to reach Kaziranga National Park:

Guahati is the nearest airport at a distance of 217 km from the park. Another domestic airport is located at Jorhat at a distance of about 97 km. The nearest railway station is at Furkating, which is 75 km away from the National Park. Tourists can also travel by private of public buses, or hire taxis to travel by road.
