BHOPAL
- Bhopal was established by an Afghan soldier, Dost Mohammed in 1707-1740. Fleeing
from Delhi in the chaotic period that followed the last powerful Mughal, Aurangzeb's
death, he met the beautiful queen Kamalapati, who sought his aid after the murder
of her consort. A charming legend relates how on moonlit nights the queen would
float down the lake on a lotus barge, a la Cleopatra. Whether Dost Mohammed
played an Antony, is not known.
Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is a fascinating amalgam of scenic beauty
and modern urban planning. It presents a multi-faceted profile; the old city
with its marketplaces and fine old mosques and palaces still bears the aristocratic
imprint of its former rulers, among them the succession of powerful Begums who
ruled Bhopal from 1819 to 1926.
In its struggles with the Marathas, Bhopal sided with the British and concluded
a treaty with them at the outbreak of the Pindari War in 1817. The Bhopal Agency,
created in 1818, was a subdivision of the British Central India Agency and comprised
the former princely states of Bhopal, Rajgarh, Narsinghgarh, and several others.
